Moral Voices on Economic Justic
The Merrin Distinguished Lecture Series 2007-2008
Moral Voices on Ecominc Justice is a year-long Hillel initiative that will address key questions throughout the course of the year: What does it mean to raise a moral voice? What is our responsibility to those who have been deprived of the basic human rights of freedom, justice, security and economic well being? What impact can your voice have at the university and beyond? This year we will examine the subject of economic justice by dealing with such topics as fair-trade coffee and health care in America.

Essay Contest
Do you need funding for a project to combat economic and social injustice locally or globally?
PROPOSALS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED BY TUFTS HILLEL'S MERRIN DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES MORAL VOICES PROJECT CONTEST.
We seek to inspire students to action by providing funding for student-initiated projects to address some aspect of social and economic injustice. Funding to cover direct project costs as well as travel and living expenses while the student works on the project.The recipient of the award will be expected to present and evaluate his or her project upon completion.
Please submit a proposal of up to five pages that includes:
• Project description
• Assessment of need
• Project timeline
• Potential for project to be sustainable
• Clear objectives and measurable criteria for success
• Detailed budget
• Other sources of funding
Proposals may be submitted by undergraduate students at Tufts and will provide funding of up to $2000. Proposals are
due at the Granoff Family Hillel Center by Friday, March 28, 2008 at 5:00 PM.
Proposals will be reviewed by a committee composed of Tufts faculty and students. One proposal will be selected and the grant recipient(s) will be announced on Friday, April 4, 2008. For questions contact Adam at Adam.Wollstein@tufts.edu or 561-789-7409.
Holocaust Commemoration
April 7, 2008
Continuing last year's theme of Moral Voices and Genocide, Holocaust Survivor, Olga Schuman, grandmother of Tufts student Alex Schuman, will speak about her experiences. Olga Schuman was born in 1928 in Czechoslovakia and was the only survivor of her family that was sent to Auschwitz. Two of Ms. Schuman's sisters were able to flee the country with false papers and one of her brothers served in the Czech underground. In 1946 the four siblings reunited after the war and immigrated to America, and in 1948 she married Walter Schuman and had 4 children. Ms. Schuman is also the proud grandmother of ten.

PANGEA's mission is to increase awareness of global issues, take action to aid international communities, and produce informed Tufts alumnae who will use their experiences to lead our generation in creating a more just world. Volunteering
Tufts students travel to Centro Presente in Somerville Monday through Thursday to work one-on-one with immigrant high school students at least once a week. Much of the help is focused on college applications, financial aid forms and the MCAS, the test that every student in Massachusetts must pass in order to graduate. The program is committed to promoting academic excellence in all students, by focusing our resources on Somerville's immigrant youth. We believe that every student can be an invaluable catalyst for social change and community empowerment and trust that every under-performing student is a dynamic individual with untapped potential.
Required Reading
The goal of Required Reading: A Health and Human Rights Publication is to raise awareness about issues of health and human rights that are often overlooked by the mainstream media. It is believed that thoughtful, informed citizens are a requirement for a responsible society. These problems are complex—they have no easy answers. Understanding them is only the first step towards finding solutions, but it is a crucial one. Even a small amount of knowledge can be the catalyst for changes that affect millions of lives.
